if you have the gradient to do small, large will be more efficient. a lot of the west and southwest states could do it, but most of the rest of the US

couldn't.
plus geothermal holes cost a fortune to drill, and have a fairly high miss rate. makes it tricky for individuals to do. not impossible, but it's definitely more efficient on a larger scale.
