my first cookbook was The Food Stamp Gourmet. I forget who wrote it, but it was illustrated by Gilbert Shelton (fabulous furry freak bros, Mr Natural etc) which is why i bought it. and basically shows you slam bam methods of cooking classic dinners with inexpensive shopping lists (Coq au Vin just had you toss all the veggies in the pot, my mom was agast as she did it Julia Child way with timing the addition of this and that so everything was just done right at the end)
favorite cookbook...American Test Kitchen series, years books. they teach the why of things along with the how.
