I'm thinking more about the eastern side.

Small geothermal is basically a hole in the ground with pipes in it. You're using the ambient temp of the ground beneath the house to cool or warm. It's not about tapping for water. I'm not sure it's the right terminology, but it's a more passive system (like passive solar).
