Fits the trend I've noticed over the past couple months, he's been consistently doubling down on the base whenever he has a chance to go moderate

in the current political environment, any sort of ideological compromise for a play towards the middle would not be tolerated. The "big tent" is out. The only available strategy then is to grab onto the idea (illusion?) that the unaffiliated can be persuaded to join you if only you can make a convincing enough argument.
