There is always an appeal to the base. That isn't being debated. The question is where is Romney's appeal to the middle?

He's had choices where he could moderate his ideas to appeal to the middle. That's what happens in the general election, you move to the middle.
Romney has moved to the middle. Which makes it look like he's not sure he can carry his base.

Obama has staked out the middle more in the last 4 years than he's run to the left, so he doesn't have to make as as much of a shift now
