Surprisingly, no mention of dressage.

Responses:
I read this the other day and they make good points. Well, not the woman that wants to eliminate swimming events.

Dana White would have to give up some control, and that will never happen. -- nm

I think the IOC was able to at least force FIFA to concede a little, but even that was the paltry under 23. -- nm

not if the IOC just adds. Then the fighters would have to decide for themselves -- nm

there's a fairly involved process the IOC goes through, it's not just "MMA? cool."

the IOC doesn't do that though. There has to be an independent international body that applies for admission. -- nm

Why? Rich people like dressage and the NYT wouldn't want to upset them. -- nm

They do mention sailing which is as rich a sport as there is. -- nm

Sailing has been cut back a lot, but the tiny boats in the Olympics are cheap dinghies. -- nm

But to learn to sail, even a cheap dinghy, costs a lot of money and requires access to a boat.

I grew up dirt poor and still learned how to sail. It helped to live in FL, but there were lots of cheap 2 person sailboats around. -- nm

You don't need to pay dock fees if you can hitch your boat onto the back of a trailer and drive it back to your home. -- nm

I understand that. My point is that the equipment/fees to get started isn't cheap.

not as much as you'd think, is what we're saying. It's about the same price as buying a kayak, which no one ever seems to take issue with as a sport. -- nm

On those type of boats, it's not an exclusive event. Plus all the competitors are given identical boats. It's not like the America's Cup. -- nm

I mean that a median income person would be able to take up sailing in a small boat as a hobby.

Look up the price of a Laser sailboat or a Hobie cat. It's about the same cost as buying a kid a full set of new hockey equipment -- nm

So it's not free but it's not exhorbitant either, is what I'm saying. There are mountain bikes that are more expensive. -- nm
