The killing of the kid was needed. Thus far, the only "good" person who has been seriously injured is Hank. Bad people have done horrible things to other bad people.
While tragic and disturbing, the death of an innocent child is needed to demonstrate the impact of their behavior. The shot of the crack den in season 2 did something similar but those were adults who had made choices. The plane crash victims were faceless so while they served a purpose, their deaths were impersonal.
This was a fearless boy who did absolutely nothing wrong. He suffered for Heisenberg's sins. Mike was unwilling to kill two innocent men who engineered the train. Walt and Jesse agreed with this. Their plan was to avoid bloodshed. This is how criminals attempt to differentiate between themselves and the truly bad people in life. Yesterday's turn of events demonstrates that they are exactly the people they do not consider themselves to be.
Cinema lovers will also note that Jesse was torn between the dark and the light at several points during the episode. Many of the camera shots emphasized this.
