This is one of the many reasons I admire Vince Gilligan's storytelling. He uses the desert as a background character. This was the plan that seemed to account for *everything*. The reason Walt was unwilling to cut the flow too soon was because he was relishing in committing the perfect crime. He did not want to quit before they could claim total achievement of stated goals.
What cops always say is that there is no such thing as the perfect crime. This is a beautiful demonstration of it. The one aspect that nobody could have accounted for was a kid on a bike showing up at that particular dead spot in the desert at that moment. They're in the middle of nowhere, a place that doesn't even have cellphone reception. It bordered on being a mathematical impossibility and that's why the whole series of events is genius.
