I understand that. My point is that the equipment/fees to get started isn't cheap.

If I wanted to be a world class swimmer, runner, or any number of other sports it wouldn't cost me much to get started. But to be a world class sailor I feel like it would be expense and exclusive to people with some money.

Most people get great at what they do in school and get a lot of training in college with coaches. Not likely the case for sailing. I don't know of many schools that offer sailing classes.
