Tomorrow I have a potential career moment to decide.

Brief background: Our team lead stepped aside from that role 2 months ago. Her boss is temporarily taking on her role until the end of the year when they will decide what to do. He is currently out of the country on vacation. I am one of 2 senior PMs who are acting as team leads while he's gone.
Today on my way home I got a phone call about a new high-profile project that needs immediate attention. It isn't complicated, but for some reason it went politically plaid and was taken all the way to the Chairman. In the morning I need to assign a PM to this project.
I'm tempted to take this on myself. I can rearrange my project load to take this on for the short time that it should last. Having this kind of management attention means that I can get everyone to drop what they're doing and help me to move mountains. I love these kinds of projects. And the good publicity could help me if they decide they need a new team lead at the end of the year.
The downside to this is that I'm going on vacation starting this weekend. It is highly likely that this won't be done in the 2 days I have left, so I'll be working during my vacation. This could cause wife aggro. It is also possible that this will have no major impact on my career and I will have only succeeded in donating my time to the company.
If I don't do this project, it will probably go to the other senior PM.
