I'm really sorry. I can't help you with Budget but point out the time difference to them.

Have them pull your original contract where the damage was noted. That's really your only hope if you shredded your original. If they insist it was you or "can't find the original contract", get your insurance company involved.

My guess? They tried to get the person after you and they fought it successfully so it is your turn.
