You can ask for an explanation of why it took so long for them to contact you and note that any number of people may have rented the car after you got the okay with the person that inspected your car when you dropped it. If you drove straight through, that's probably another point in your favor (less chance to hit something on the freeway).

Like I said, my guess is that they're working backwards from when they discovered the damage and it's your turn. They'll have a better explanation than that, but that's what it is.
