He believes (or believed - it's possible that someone has explained the real issue to him by now, although whether he understands or believes that person is still up for debate) that his mistake was in the "legitimate rape" comment - or at least that it was his only mistake. He honestly still believes that only bad girls who really secretly wanted to have sex are the ones who get raped and get pregnant from it. the supporting comments from the FRC back that up, and he's wrapped himself up in a nice little deterministic world where if something bad happens to you it's because you did something wrong.
