In response to "I think Stephen is dead on with what Akin is currently thinking, and it's revealed by his misspoke comment" by Reagen

To some degree, I believe that viewpoints such as this one reflect the glass house nature of xenophobes.

He has this odd perception of behavior regarding the meticulously organized groups of people he has never met. Single mothers must be whores who deserve whatever carnal punishment is administered. I would expect for his views on Hispanics, Muslims, African-Americans and other minority groups to be equally attention-grabbing due to their almost innocent bigotry. I say almost innocent because his level of intellect is such that I struggle to find the meanness in his comments (at least the ones I've read). Instead, they are wholly ignorant.

I joke about being from the south a lot. There have been times where I have been involved in conversations with otherwise good people in my estimation. The comments they make are so woefully misguided that I struggle to find the hate in them. It's why I believe education is so crucial to overcoming bigotry. A decent home economics teacher could have saved this guy's political career.

In a way, I feel like the far right swing of the conservative party has pushed politicians to one-up each other on comments such as this. I don't know whether this guy is decent or a bastard. What I do know is that his comments are vile. Does he mean them? Absolutely. Does he understand them? I think not. And the blame for his willingness to say them is not his own. He has been goaded. Now he is being railroaded and probably rightfully so since he cannot be a sitting elected official in Washington. He was led all the way down this path by others, though.
