Beaker's B2 link is the reason I can't get upset about things like the NYC ban on big sodas.

I mean, obviously it's a government regulation that affects individual choice.

But companies do all sorts of things to affect individual choices, so they can sell more product. Some of this has benefits for consumers, but a lot of the time it doesn't.

Obviously we all have to take responsibility for our independent choices, but out choices aren't as independent as we think they are in the first place. We make a lot of decisions without thinking, and based on human behaviours that we as individuals don't really understand, but that companies that hire psychological experts, test through focus groups and invest millions in marketing campaigns do.

Why is it OK for a company like McDonalds to convince us to eat more of something that, if we eat too much of it, can damage our health? How is this different from a government saying "No soda bottles over this size"?
