Seems to me that it would be the clerics who would be most likely to turn atheist.

They actually deal with scripture and dogma. It's their job to interpret and discuss, rather than eat it up wholesale. While most parishioners are probably happy to believe "It is so because I'm told it is so", the pastors must be in on the deal, fooling themselves, or defecting.
