How is the US the #1 country in the world? Do we rank countries solely on the amount of money they make now?

Cause usually the exceptionnalism is mostly about the incredible amount of freedom they have compared to the world.
I'm not trying to put the US down at all, but I do follow Canadian politics, and we don't do that here. We get a great deal of French politics, and while they're annoying as hell, they don't do that.
