I'm going with the latter. I know people like this. Here's the thing, often people think that because they worked hard to achieve what they did,

that means that a) they did it all on their own and b) anybody can do it if they just work hard enough. Speaking for myself, I worked hard through school and I didn't have a trust fund or anything like that. In one sense I started from scratch and did it on my own. But (and it's a big but), I did live in a nice place in a nice, safe neighborhood. I was able to go to the best schools (private schools) and my parents paid for it so when I came out of school I was not stuck with a mound of debt. I did work hard and achieve success, but it's disingenous to say I had no advantages. But some people don't like that part of their personal narrative. They want to focus only on their own hard work. It's a rationalization, but we all rationalize things from time to time to fit the narrative we want to believe.
