Americans who live in smaller states don't want their choices to be marginalised by the larger states with more voters.
But at the same time, allowing Wyoming to have the same number of electoral votes as California would be ludicrous.
So there's a compromise, with an Electoral college that balances the concerns of smaller states against the larger populations.
While it's not perfect, there's no pressing issue about how this system operates - like, say, in Canada with appointed Senators, or House of Lords reform and revised constituent boundaries in the US. so why upset the balance that most people are reconciled with?
