Even if it's an EMP or some magical occurrence, society would - at worst - be reduced to about 100 years ago. OK, so there's no electricity. You still cannot rule out steam power. Steam power is a visual medium. You can see water boil and the steam turn the turbine. Coal - and fuels of all kind - still burns and pumps pistons.
