Question about buying a TV episode on iTunes or Amazon.

If I buy an episode from iTunes or Amazon what format are they in? I'm trying to figure out of I buy some TV shows and download them to my HDD if I can play them through my WDTV Live+. I can't seem to find the information on Google. But I could be searching wrong though.
