when Cruise and Renner are trapped in the car in the river. Cruise puts a flare in the body of the Director and the bad guys inexplicably start firing on a floating corpse with a flare in it.

The next scene was the insulting part with Cruise trying to explain it away as...they're "not Rhodes Scholars".
