Because, in the case of David O. Russell, he's not just the director but also the writer, which means he has a clear understanding of what he wants

When an actor is hired, he or she is hired to work with the director on shaping their performance. Bale going shit nuts because the DP was going about doing their job is a bullshit move, but that's just an opinion of one person who has worked on a variety of film sets as a production assistant and assistant director for almost twenty years.
