They're really just quoting him. Honestly there are times when it reminds me of a scene from a movie where a woman catches her husband in bed with

another woman, and as she becomes angry and upset he just denies that there is anything going on (or even anyone else there) while the woman and he get dressed and she leaves. She's pointing at the woman and yelling "how could you sleep with that woman" and he just calmly replies "what woman? what are you talking about? There's nobody else here". Until the other woman is gone and the wife is left there wondering if she's going crazy. I wish I could remember what movie it is.
