It's interesting to me that he's not trying to pin the blame on the Democrats. It would be easy to say "Yeah, I voted for the trigger - but it's the Democrats fault that the budget deal collapsed. They aren't willing to come to a reasonable deal that involves not raising taxes. These defence cuts come courtesy of the Democrats"

Obviously I'm not saying that's what happened. But it's what I'd say if I were running for Republican VP.
