I had a kiwi beekeeper working for me last year (was a driller for a couple years to make enough money to buy his bees). he says the common view in NZ

is that it happens in overproduced colonies. applying industrial techniques to produce greater amounts of honey stresses the colonies. they can keep up for a while, but eventually collapse under the strain. it's apparently not a problem in NZ.
he worked in several apiaries in Canada and the US, and said he's not surprised it happens, given what he saw there.
