In a sense, Obama's win in 2008 was the end of the GOP as we knew it.

There's no doubt that the party will continue to evolve and an entity known as the Republican Party will continue to exist. Some hope that an Obama win will finally make the GOP more moderate. As discussed on ST, many expect that an Obama win will actually make the GOP more extreme. If it does indeed become more extreme, maybe a 3rd party will step in the middle-of-the-road void. But that doesn't mean the GOP will just dry up and fade away.
