In response to "What is a jaundice lamp? -- nm" by Redmond

The treatment for jaundice is lots of direct light, which breaks up the cells and gets the blood back to normal.

In the hospital, they just shine these fairly bright lights on the baby's skin all day, flipping him occasionally like a pancake to make sure they get all of it. And to keep from the baby staring at it and hurting his eyes, they put a white eyepatch wrap on their head.

And it doesn't hurt them, but my little dude, down in the NICU, and I can't explain to him why his eyes won't work all day, and I'm watching him struggle to pull the headband off, and I have to put it back on to protect him, but he's obviously upset, and he can't have a blanket on b/c he needs the direct light, and all I wanted was just to hold him and let him know it would be ok but I couldn't...

That day fucked me up. I had to leave the hospital and go to Toys R Us and buy him like $100 of toys he couldn't use so I felt like I was helping. It's fucking me up now remembering it.
