The mass of the log (note: not tree) comes from mostly CO2 (not just air), some water and very small amounts of minerals. None of the Harvard students named CO2 or even air as a source of mass and some disputed that even when told.
Again, the idea was not they are dum, but that they've gotten this far without understanding a fundamental concept of science, and that even when we think we're teaching students ideas, they're not always getting what we think they're getting.
