but that makes it sound more like a physics problem than a chemistry problem.

Between two answers:
"I don't know how it works, but I know the answer is CO2" and
"I don't know, but I'd approach the solution by first finding out what chemicals comprise the mass of the log, and then determine the possible sources of those chemicals"
I'd give more credit to the second answer because it's a better problem solving answer.
