I think that graphic makes perfect sense (reasoning inside)

If you're an income earner in one of the red states, and you see that for every 1 1/2 taxpayers there's someone who doesn't pay income tax, of course you're going to vote for the party that says "you pay too much tax, we're going to lower it".

While in the blue states, there are 2 or three taxpayers for everyone who doesn't pay income tax. So the burden is a lot less.

And places with high income inequality generally have the rich people living separately from the poor people, so for everyone there's less understanding of how the other half lives, and views like "they're just parasites" and "we deserve entitlements" are more common.
