There's no information for how those who make under $15,000 voted, nor is there information on who paid taxes and who did not. That said:
Your theory gets some support by the fact that they only group to break for Obama over McCain in Alabama made between $15,000 and $30,000. The 30-50K group supported McCain one percentage more than than the 50-75 group oddly enough (considering that the 30-50 group, if they are married and have two kids, may not pay any taxes). The 75-100 group went overwhelmingly for McCain.
These numbers may be skewed from your average year since there was higher-than-average African-American turnout and, in Alabama, African-Americans tend to be poor. (That could skew the exit poll above as well)
