I think this election (and 2004) were both winnable in a way that, say, 1984 and 1996 were not.

I think the reasons that they are not being won by the non-incumbent are that in both 2004 and 2012, you have good candidates that are saving themselves for a non-incumbent race, resulting in an uninspiring leadership choice, and you have an opposition party that has been unable to get behind a single clear direction for the party.
