Dance with Dragons spoiler question

was the identity of Reek supposed to be somewhat of a surprise that was revealed later in the book?

I just read his first chapter and thought it was pretty obvious who it was.

Of course, I already knew going in that Reek was actually Theon, but even not knowing that, I thought it would have been easy to figure out.

Did people reading DwD without knowing about Reek ahead of time figure it out right away?
