Coolio is right. Thread count is a Western marketing ploy. The quality of the cotton and the production are the most important things to consider.

I used to do sample sales in NYC for Italian linen companies that have been around for hundreds of years. (frette, analu etc...) The companies would do clinics for us and they'd send their Managers from Italy to teach us about the products. The concept of thread count to them is kind of ridiculous but they understand it has become very important to a lot of American shoppers.
