her. I came up yesterday afternoon spur of the moment because I got called to come back to work next week. I thought it would be fun to explore an area where my family lived in the 1800's. Someone up here in Fulton County put together a pretty comprehensive website that includes a list of cemeteries and everyone who is buried there. I put together a spreadsheet from that - cemetery, section & row, name(s). I got a map of the county from the desk clerk here (Holiday Inn Express) that has the cemeteries marked (saved me a lot of work). The only thing I didn't have was the maps of the cemeteries themselves that showed how the sections and rows were laid out. Thank goodness for smart phones and good coverage as I was able to use my phone to get the cemetery layouts. I got every pic I came for. Plus, since I was so close to Toledo I took a quick trip to a family cemetery (Haughton, on my great-grandmother's side) and took more pics. Most of the people here in Fulton are cousins as my great grandfather left the area and moved to central Michigan.
I had one very freaky experience at the last cemetery. I left my list of names in the car while I used the phone to find the rows. I took pics of 3 tombstones and 1 plinth in row 7. I knew there were more relatives in row 8. I turned around and found myself fully face-on with a plinth that had *my* name on it. I'd forgotten there was one dead relative with my first name. I actually got goosebumps.
Tomorrow I'll be visiting the county historical museum. I saw video of new exhibits they put up for the Civil War anniversary, including a panel of names of county residents who signed up. I came across several graves with GAR medals (Grand Army of the Republic) and I know a Houghton cousin (from Toldeo) was a Brigadier General. I was surprised to see the GAR at my great-great grandfather's grave. I'm not sure anyone in the family today is aware of that (they seem more gaga about the general).
And, JenBro, there are black squirrels here. But they're all wusses. I couldn't get close enough to get a good pic because they kept running away.
