in the comic it was Dale who got bit and his leg chopped off....
the difference between the tv and comic is the passage of time. On tv time moves a lot slower so we have to have a point where they jump ahead some months on the tv show so that she can have the baby.
In the comics as they reach the prison she's ready to have the baby....
