I'm so glad you made him go to a doctor. I've actually seen men come into my office with orchitis that they were in toxic shock. I try not to get people in a panic when I answer that kind of question, but it's hard not to when you know it's one of only 3-4 things and they're all pretty serious.
Keep an eye on him and if he's not significantly better in 3-4 days, take him back to the doctor/ER/clinic because that means his antibiotics aren't effective against whatever bug he has. :)
