I assumed that the "alternate Halloween" days/times had to do with bedtime.

By the time it gets dark around here, I'd imagine it conflicts with (or comes close to) small children's bedtimes. Nathan's tiny so he won't care this year, but he's in bed around 7:30 or 8:00 every night. There will be, what, a half hour of dark before bedtime? That's enough time to get him into his costume, go to 2 or 3 houses, and get him changed into PJs, fed and into bed.
As he won't be eating candy and won't remember, he won't care, but I can see why a 2 or 3 yr old would be upset. Kids around here wait until dark to go out for candy.
I think alternate Halloween is a bit silly, too, but I can sorta see why some like it.
