Vermin, any other Photoshoppers, any idea what would be causing this?

I'm using the pen tool, which was working correctly a few weeks ago.
When I go to set an anchor point, the point sometimes ends up considerably off of where I'm actually clicking.
See the example - I started the pen in the lower lefthand corner, and clicked in the middle of the white dot - you can see where the anchor point ended up.
It's almost like snap is on, but I've checked and rechecked and it's off.
It's very annoying - I can't control the stupid pen at all.
Any ideas?

pen is an awful tool, photogs make a loose selection to a new layer then erase the edges, a more advanced v, use a layer mask and b/w airbrush to

Hmm. That's what I would have suggested: check the 'snap to' settings. Beyond that, I have no idea. Sorry!

Is there a gauge parameter for the tool? A distance you can set?
