i have a motto for being a good party guest 'always be hosting'. if you are the 'host' you can talk to anyone.

so, make yourself 'officially involved' in some way. show people who just walked in where to put their coats, just say 'oh, if you're looking for the (real) hostess, she's in the kitchen." whatever.
if you can give yourself something to 'do' then, you can talk to anyone, and, you make a good guest by mingling.
(i'm not saying take over someone's party or anything, just be helpful, people like 'helpful.')
