Airline pricing rant, LYC

I need to go to Japan and then India next month. Booking US - Japan, Japan - India, India-US would make sense, right? But it costs over $4500.
Alternatively, booking a round-trip US-Japan or US-India, and then booking a separate round-trip between Japan and India totals out to about $2000 less.
But, that means that I have to fly home via the following routing:
Inida-Hong Kong-Tokyo (stop, stay at hotel overnight)
Tokyo-US next day
Or, if I want a more direct flight home (I do) then I have to fly out
US-Delhi-Hong-Kong-Tokyo
I hate airline pricing models.
