In response to "One thing I hope last night's election proved to people is that a presidential candidate being anti the incumbent is not enough to win." by Inigo

I disagree about the campaign bit...

The president ran an atypical Democrat Presidential Campaign. It was Clinton like in it's willingness to shine a light into the oppositions dirty bits. Romney was on defense the entire time save for 1 week+ after the first debate. They defined him early and hard and it stuck. Then the Romney Campaign ran a pretty bad campaign. His Boston Brain Trust did not cover themselves in glory.

Had the GOP run an exciting candidate Obama would have been in trouble, I agree but look at their field of candidates. These are people who 20 - 30 years ago would have had to spend all the remaining campaign cash they had to buy 30mins of ad time while the real candidates debated. I've never seen such a collection of people who were completely unpalatable. The Primaries messed Mitt up because he had to appeal to some pretty amazingly extreme positions and then walk them back in 6 weeks. The fact that it was as close up until last night is something people will study.
