Anyone ever looked into those whole-house water filtration companies?

A friend of mine is talking with a company named Ecowater that is trying to sell him a system that will run about $6,000 installed. He wants me to use my mad internet searching skills to check this out for him.
So far, I haven't been able to find much about the company or this kind of product. Mostly what I have seen is that you should be able to buy a water softener and water filters, including having them installed, for a lot less than $6K. I have no idea what they are offering that would make it worth that much.
Anyone have experience with this or heard anything useful?
