I think someone gives to avoid it prior to 1/1 but I'm not sold yet.

The (very smart) Tom Miller of HSBR has suggested that they can wait until the Bush tax cuts expire on 12/31 and then pass a compromise in early January the (effectively) results in the tax cuts being retained for those under 250 without any GOP reps having to actually vote to increase taxes on those over 250. (Since the tax cuts would expire on 12/31, they'd actually be voting in the first week of January for 'new' tax cuts for those under 250)
But I think the push for a compromise sooner rather than later, both from the global markets and the public will result in something coming together in Nov/Dec
