I don't know if it is the government's fault. Certainly the American gov't isn't as bad as China when it comes to censorship

It's just that truly new and exciting things aren't happening quite as often as they used to, and with so many companies catering (read: pandering, as the Time/CNN article about Facebook seems to be doing until it's last sentence) to whatever demographic it can get, very little new and exciting is going to happen in the future
