it has gone way beyond a personal matter. Everyone with any sense should recognize that if they believe infidelity shouldn't matter and yet the term "scandal" still applies to these cases, your opinion is a minority one in the wide world. This is the world we live in now. It does not matter if it's fair or not. If Petraeus wants to be the Rosa Parks of infidelity and lead a march of government employees stating that human dignity demands that they be allowed to stay in their publicly funded jobs and stick their dicks wherever they want, so be it. But you have to be an idiot to think that's going to play out favorably.
He's a four star general. He's spent enough time in the military (say, more than basic training) to know that this kind of incident can get someone court martialed.
He's the head of the CIA. He knows that's a job that requires Congressional approval and background checks and clearance to hold. This isn't a job where you design clothes or run pass routes. This is an industry where the only secrets that never get found out are the ones with no living witnesses or a shred of evidence to be found. He fucking knows about cyperwarfare.
He's the head of the CIA. He has a direct line of influence to the most powerful person on the planet. The importance of this role, both in safety and politically, cannot be understated. He knows the consequences of what happens when the public or press or congress gets any whiff of wrongdoing for someone in this position. He isn't the janitor at the Pawnee courthouse.
He betrayed his family. Voluntarily. Repeatedly. He exposed his office and his boss and the country to criticism and doubt. He did it and left evidence for people to find.
His decisionmaking ability is the entire fucking point.
