MLB was the last of the 4 major sports to have their own network in the US.

NHL was the closest at just over a year before MLB. NFL Network beat them by 5 years, and the NBA beat them by a decade. Selig was too late getting that off the ground.
Responses:
The MLB network is part of most basic cable packages, none of the other three are. That alone makes is better for giving the league exposure.
