As far as I know, they were already under bankruptcy proceedings when the union decided to strike. So if the order was salary bump->bankruptcy->strike

Then that kind of explains things. Greedy and stupid leeches suffocating their own company from the top.
Corporate america is littered with executives who latch on to companies and do this. I've witnessed it, when a canadian subsidiary of an american company brought in some american executives ... worthless bunch of corporate speak spewers.
