But even so, do they go out of business without those brands? Selling Coke (or Twinkies) by themselves is an unsustainable business model?

That's what I don't understand. The company I work for has not expanded in its 30 year life. We survive by not spending more than we earn, and we haven't lost any business even as new businesses have joined the industry. I don't understand how it would be unsustainable to continue selling Coke or Twinkies for a population that has tripled in the time since they were first introduced.
